It's a blast from the past! Our Ellipse blend is back and ready to brighten your lattes.
This blend shares the versatility and approachability of Arboretum while offering a lighter, brighter flavor profile. By presenting two African coffees together, Ellipse provides an accessible introduction to traditionally prized qualities of coffees from Ethiopia: Floral and lush aromatics, structured berry-like acidity, concentrated citrus sweetness.
It a special year for Ellipse, as both the natural process and washed process lots in this blend are from Tokuma group farmers. The Tokuma group is a collective of smallholder farmers in Western Ethiopia. They grow, process and export their own coffee, rather than selling it to an exporter or to the Ethiopian Commodities Exchange (ECX). Just a few years ago, exporting independently wasn’t an option for smallholder farmers. However, recent changes in export regulations have made this possible. This allows each lot from Tokuma to be fully traceable back to the specific farm where it was cultivated. More importantly, it helps lower production costs and ensures that more money stays with the farmers who work so hard to bring this coffee to market.
Five years ago, we began our partnership with the Tokuma group by purchasing from Mensur Aba Hika. Last season, we were proud to offer female producer Nesru Aba Nura’s natural processed coffee as part of our perennial flagship blend, Arboretum. Nesru and Mensur are husband and wife and each of them produce their own stellar lots. This year we are pleased to work with new members of the group, including Nesru and Mensur’s neighbors, Abdo Aba Mecha and Mohammed Aba Nura. You’ll find Abdo’s washed lot and Mohammed’s natural lot in Arboretum very soon. Plus, both lots will make up 100% of Ellipse this year.
