Small Planes' sourcing partnership with Long Miles Coffee Project (LMCP) dates back to 2018, our very first full year in operation. We purchased two lots from their 2018 Burundi harvest. Fast forward to now, LMCP's stellar coffees from the hills of Burundi have become a roastery staple and a core tenant on our menu. Last season alone, we offered three different lots produced by LMCP including Ninga Hill, a beautiful anaerobic honey lot.

We are proud to share another coffee from the Ninga Hill community. There are a few distinctions from last year's lot. First, it is a fully washed process lot. Second, it is solely made up of coffee from farmers who are part of a grassroots organization called the Farmer Field School (FFS). FFS was formed in 2015 by the Long Miles Coffee Scouts, a group of ambitious junior agronomists. Up until 2020, the FFS lots were processed together with ~5,500 families who deliver to the Long Miles Washing Stations.

By providing a framework for exchange of knowledge and ideas, the school brings community members together with the goal of strengthening their farming practices on a holistic level. The farmers who deliver to the LMCP Washing Stations are extremely motivated and there is currently a waiting list to be part of the school. A key aspect of the training is teaching families how to plan, budget, and run a farm as a regenerative and long term investment to their family.

Since the inception of FFS, farmers have planted coffee trees, nitrogen-fixing plants, green manures, a mix of indigenous plants, and shade trees on their farms. 'FFS is not just about growing quality Burundi coffee; it's about the practice of showing up each week'.

In the cup, we taste stone fruit, lemony black tea, blackberry pie, and warming spices. The finish has a lingering, ultra-sweet brown sugar note, seamlessly harmonizing the complex spicy, floral, and fruity flavors. Just in time for summer, Ninga Hill offers everything we love about the classic Burundi flavor profile.

Long Miles Coffee Project (LMCP) was founded by Ben and Kristy Carlson in 2011 to ‘facilitate direct and meaningful relationships between coffee roasters and coffee growers by producing great coffee and telling the story of the farmers who grow it’.
