The Riakiberu factory owned by the Kamacharia Farmers Cooperative Society has over 1,000 members and grows mainly SL28 and SL34, with a small amount of Batian and Ruiru 11 varieties. The governance of coffee in Kenya is a well-established auction system that is extremely transparent and provides organization of physical and sensorial quality which cherry price is directly linked to, allowing for updated market prices for coffees in the region. The benefits of having a democratically run organization with producers being both members and representatives of the board allows for cooperatives to sell their coffee through the auction or outside the auction (selling directly to a consumer) for the ability to negotiate the best price for the coffee.

We love Kenyan coffees for their deliciously complex and wide spectrum of flavors.  This lot from Riakiberu is an ode to just how much flavor coffee from Kenya can pack. Aromas envelop the nose ranging from Raisins to Currants to Hibiscus bringing colors of mauve and magenta to the imagination. Those deep aromas are complemented lovingly with flavors of citrus and tropical fruits which will quickly have you wishing you were looking up at palm trees and sipping a cup at the beach. We taste dried mango, cream, and chamomile florals supported by a tangerine-like acidity that will make you feel like the sun is shining against your skin. And let's be honest here folks, everybody loves the sunshine.
