Tasting Notes: Walnut Brownie, Dried Fruit, Black Tea

Leonela Rivera’s farm, Finca La Gloria, is glorious indeed. It sits very near the top of a verdant mountain on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Central, just over the border from Cauca. The nearest town is Nátaga, not a common place to source coffee, and not just because you can only reach her farm by a steep and rocky footpath. Our green buyer met Leonela last October, and tasted some of her coffee, pan-roasted, and brewed at the farm. It was so delicious, and Leonela so charming, that Cassie and Kyle Ramage (of Black & White Roasters) decided then and there to split whatever lot she could get to our importing partner. This is the first-ever single farm lot from Nátaga on Osito’s books. Y’all are getting something fresh.

This coffee is strongly nutty, with mild walnut tannins. It’s got a silky, coating texture like the center of a milk chocolate truffle, but the slightly more bittersweet flavor of a baking chocolate. Mid-palate sweetness reminds us of dried fruit - a little bit apple, a little bit cranberry, a little bit golden raisin. It finishes with a tea-like body and a mild lemon oil citrus note. It's kind of like you grabbed a handful of fruity trail mix and glass of sun tea. (You know sun tea, right? Like black tea, steeped in a pitcher on the back porch some sunny day?) Maybe it’s nostalgia speaking, but we think this is a great filter brew to welcome spring.
