Grupo La Plata formed in the last year by 17 producers in La Plata (and one across the valley, in Paez, Cauca), and is led by Didier Javier Pajoy. Average farm size in Huila is under 3 hectares, so many farmers don’t hire non-familial help during harvest. This has the potential for increased quality control, but it can also be isolating. Self-organized coops like Grupo La Plata provide support as growers improve farm practices and plant new varieties. In this case, each farm already uses or is transitioning to organic practices, and many farmers are planting their first crops of pricier varieties like pink bourbon and gesha.

Like most coffees from Huila, this three-variety blend is sweet, bright, and fragrant. Soft citrus, florals, and caramel aromas float over a gently nutty, milk chocolaty core. The body carries some nice malic juiciness - think dried stone fruits, white grape juice. Notes of sweet herbs, honey, and baking spices reminds us of poached pears.
