Burundian coffee farms dot collines, ‘hills’ in the colonial Belgian French, and deliver coffee to their local washing stations. Each colline represents a microclimate, most with ideal coffee-growing conditions of high elevation, nitrogen-rich volcanic soil, mild temperatures, and gentle rainfall. American expats Ben & Kristy Carlson started Long Miles Coffee Project (LMCP) to ‘facilitate direct and meaningful relationships between coffee roasters and coffee growers by producing great coffee and telling the story of the farmers who grow it’ (LMCP website).
Previously we have purchased coffee from the Heza washing station and this year we take a focus on the hills specifically and processing through LMPC in Burundi. Nkonge is one of the Hills closest to Heza Washing station. This washed processed Burundian coffee is our first of the season. The epitome of that classic profile we all know and love from coffees out of Burundi; Nkonge brings baking spices, stone fruits and black tea to the table and comes together with incredible structure. A subtle sweet earthiness coats a sugar dense apple and apricot-like acidity, warming you up like a fresh baked apple pie would.
