The Kanzu washing station is centrally located within the Nayamasheke District in the southwest of Rwanda, near enough the banks of Lake Kiva to see its waters on a clear day. These hills reach over 2200 masl and are covered in nutrient-dense volcanic soil - ideal growing conditions for dense, ripe cherries. Coupled with meticulous processing, Kanzu lots can be some of the most consistent, clean cups in Eastern Africa.

At Kanzu, lots are separated by harvest week and numbered accordingly. Lot 15 was harvested in mid-June 2018 and was our favorite on the cupping table this year. You’ll remember from Hunapu that bourbons are known for brewing up smooth cups with balanced, crisp acidity and a sweet finish - Kanzu Lot 15 is a great example of this varietal grown in another part of the world. Here we meet gentle black tea, strong baking spices (like clove and allspice), and that unusual raspberry/citrus combo you find in blood oranges. It has a buttery, creamy body that finishes with the lingering dark sweetness of caramelized sugars.
